Behind the onion - Scientific X-ray Vision 科學超人眼

On the left-hand side, it is a picture as everyone is able to take on the side-view of a flame. This image is as the same as what we normally taking in our daily life - we are imaging living three dimensional objects onto a screen. The screen gathers all the information of all the objects projected as a two dimensional picture. Is it possible to see what's in the middle between objects on the picture? How can we get to see only one slice located at the center plane of the flame? Superman gets his talent X-ray eye to see this world but we don't.

The right-hand side picture is a mathematically resolved image located right in the middle of the flame. I am  expressing my admire to those scientists open up all of mysteries of physical phenomenon by mathematics. They are hard thinkers. They are one kind of philosopher trying to make the life having more sense.

CNC intro, 3D printer, laser cutter, wax printer... etc.

W6C3 - Modern technique intro.

The final class today is meant to wrapped up and introducing of all the modern techniques. Such as how CNC milling function and communicate, injection molding, 3D printing, etc.. We appreciate Ben at Rapidtech giving a quick introduction of all the machines.

Fresh-cooked little cuties from printing machine. They need to shower a bit.

The class come to an end at this moment. Hope the world is at least slightly different and becoming amazing in their eyes.

New teflon burner base insulator

According to the need of adding the degree of freedom on coordinate of the experiment burner, a new burner base is needed under the constrain of limited height with respect to where the laser beam is situated.

A simple practice of CAD design and drawing.

After a series of constrains as well as the estimation of the effective insulation thickness, a 3/8" teflon square bar is chosen 7000th thicker than expected.

The block requires milling to facing down to 3/8 within 1000th to 2000th tolerance. Taping with 1/4-20 blind hole.

When things are not function — check and change

There should always a reason that leads to the item not working.  So do not panic about getting a new item, instead you can actually check and change for most of the time.

This is one small example of the old style car cigarette charger greedily splitting into three and malfunction.

It is how you see the world matters

This is not about what it already is. It is why.

Technologies bring convenience to us. But this world does not change as much as it turns. For those days before internet becomes ease of access, people have to grab a book to read and then get knowledge. Knowledge is now in everyone's hands. The fast path to acquire all the information no mater in which categories, such as social connection, or knowledge of science could have make this earth become a whole awesome world, may bring us a peaceful, kind, and well-developed palace. It turns out the population does not get ultrasmart as the development  Let's think about if the world is different from last generation or two generations before? It did change a lot. How about people/human beings? Did we change as much as this world? If we could shift the attention from only thinking about the appearance of ourselves, such as what to talk, how do I look, what I like and want, and transfer the focus on those things around our lives which were taken for granted. The world would be wonderful! It is how much you get to understand, see and feel it, and neither what it was in your eyes or how much you fear/dare.

MIG and TIG welding week — Women Fabrication Training

W3C1, and 2 Women Fabrication Training

This week female students are introduced about MIG welding, TIG welding, including learning how to cutting their machining parts.

Steve went through safety instructions and introducing the MIG welding machines.

Safety gloves and in-class demo of welding(right).

Cutting requires skills and nice posture cutting at right spot.

TIG welding.

DEMO and students are practicing.

Copper connection, Driling introduction — Women Fabrication Training

W2C3 Women Fabrication Training

Soldering is the main topic today especially focusing on how to connect copper pipes together.

The hands on skill includes how to cut the pipes, clean up the pipes and different methods on how to connect the pipes.  The technician, Dave Hartwig, introduced the procedures to the students that silver soldering takes place at the lower temperature range than brazing.

Students start working on copper pipe cutting, and they know it well from the last class.

Also, they know how to cleaning up the pipes, deburring.

Tube, Tube connecting — Women Fabrication Training

W2C2 Women Fabrication Training

The technician Dave Hartwig is showing how to use the flaring tool. Students are concentrate on practicing the skills and using the tools. Later, they get chance to work on adapters fittings and rings.

Kita gets excited and trying the bending tool.

Hand Tools - W1C2 Women Fabrication Training

The summer laboratory hands on skill training course is supported by DECADE program on campus.  It is a pleasure to not only share my own experiences but also coordinate the training with different professionals on campus as the main instructor.  The goal of the training is to create the environment which is the best for the women graduate students to embrace the fabrication skills applying in their research.

Survey. Training introduction — Women Fabrication Training

W1C1 Women Fabrication Training

The first day of every class is always important, although it seems not having too much direct teaching/learning action is going on.  It initializes the whole series of work and puts all the people together.  The main tasks on this day is taking the fabrication experience survey which offers an index for the mentor team (instructor, machinist and technician), and going over through the six-week syllabus.

ICDERS 2013 — Taiwan

Thanks for all people come to my session, and my advisor, and the most important thing is that family gets chance to see my presentation.

Thanks for those who enjoyed and came to talk to me how much they feel interested in the talk. Thanks for those who came to ask me about my future plans.  A lot of thanks to whoever is trying to giving me advice and I appreciate it.

PPPL - Princeton Plasma Physics Lab

Huge rooms for power supplies for generating power.

CEFRC at Princeton 6/22/13 - 6/28/13

In semester school system, I learned combustion in about 20 weeks. At UCI quarter system, we learn combustion in ten weeks. At CEFRC, we learn combustion in five days. Things are moving like flashes.

The most interesting thing is to meet those people who are working in the same field.

Summer school shirt and the lecture building we have stayed the whole week.
We were wearing our orange name tag all the time. It rained in the afternoon during the week.
